Is it possible for foreign objects to be pumped to the oil refining process during the re-suspension operation using P43 ?

The sequence of the operation should be planned with the refinery management team before the resuspension operation is carried out. It is remotely possible that suspended solids could be sent to the refinery, if the operator does not follow instructions according to the plan during the re-suspension process. The oil refinery would not normally take feedstock (crude oil) from the tank during the re-suspension operation, so the risk of this happening is negligible.

How do you plan the re-suspension process using the P43?

The standard method of resuspension using P43 requires fresh crude oil to be pumped through the P43 continuously for 7 2 hours and then stop for the tank contents to settle for at least 48 hours. The P43 can then be removed from manway of the tank and the tank contents can then be pumped to the refinery. This simple 2-step procedure operates the P43, then allowing the contents to settle, reduces or even eliminates the possibility of suspended solids being pumped to the refinery.

What is RDS of the refinery?

RDS is a de-sulfate system designed by Chevron and ABB. This sulfurization technology utilizing catalyst, by means of RDS, reduces the residual sulfate content of the distillation products from the Topping or cracking process to low or ultra low.

Can re-suspension be carried out for a Topping unit incorporating the RDS process?

As long as the operator follows the planned operation procedures for the re-suspension process, most (if not all) of any foreign objects and fine particles content of the crude oil will settle on to the tank floor, so will not affect the RDS process.
